If there is one health giving food I would recommend people to incorporate into their diet it is chia seeds that is because it has so many nutritional benefits and is so easy to add into your diet, due to its versatility.
However many people are unsure how to use them. So in this blog post I am going to give you a few simple ideas on effective ways to use them on a day to day basis.
Firstly you can add them to smoothies, mix them into cookie batter, sprinkle them on your salads, your muesli, porridge, just eat them off a spoon, or make a chia gel.
The seeds can absorb up to 9 times their volume in water so if you want to make a really thick Gel you can use 1:9 ratio of chia to water.
I suggest putting your chia seeds and water in a screw top jar then closing it and shaking it, then leave to stand or store in the fridge (it keeps for up to 2 weeks in the fridge)
Basic Chia Gel;
Is great for jellies, mouses and jams
1 tablespoon: 1/2 cup water
Thick Chia Gel:
This is good to use to substitute for egg:
1 tablespoon chia: 1/4 cup water (this is equal to about one egg)
Runny Chia Gel:
Use for yogurt and salad dressings, dips and soups.
1 tablespoon chia seeds: 1 cup water
When you are cooking and want to add extra nutrition to any meal then you can just add a tablespoon of Chia or use the chia gel recipes as above. If you want to add bulk to your meals especially to sauces, stews, soups and gravies, then just add some prepared chia gel to it.There is no need to worry about how to use chia seeds as they are easy to add in to almost any dish. The chia seed gel I also find great to give to babies when they start solid foods, my 1 year old loves them and it is a great source of good fats, proteins and minerals for him.
Here are some further ideas of how I use chia seeds in everyday recipes.
- 1/4 cup of chia
- 1 cup of water
- 2 bananas
- 1 green apple
- 1/4 cup goji berries
- 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
- 2 tbsp yacon syrup
- Make chia gel by putting chia with water in a screw top jar,put the lid on, shake it and leave for ten minutes.
- Mash up your bananas
- Cut up the apple into small chunks
- Add all ingredients together
- Place in two bowls pour over the yacon syrup and enjoy!!!!
This next one is delicious I call it Ice cream but it is kind of like mouse depending on how long you leave it in the freezer for.
Chia Ice Cream
- 2 Tbsp Chia Seeds
- 1 can of coconut milk
- 2 Tbsp agave syrup or raw honey
- 1 mashed up banana
- 1 tbsp cacao
- Mix ingredients in food processor for 30 seconds
- Keep on counter top for 20 mins
- Place in freezer for a couple of hours and voila
